Carter’s Review

"The Gilsey House at 1200 Broadway is one of the city's most imposing Second Empire cast-iron buildings and was declared an official city landmark September 11, 1979.

After the Civil War, several fashionable hotels opened near Madison Square along Fifth Avenue and Broadway whereas before the war "most hotels, restaurants, theaters and stores of any distinction were still below Houston Street," according to the landmark designation report."

Broker & Buyer Comments

This "storied" 19th-century cast iron landmark, once home to luminaries like Sarah Bernhardt and frequented by Oscar Wilde, offers "old-world grandeur" with modern conveniences. The "well-maintained" building provides practical amenities including "basement laundry", bike storage, and individual storage units, while the "straightforward" board process focuses on financials. "Supremely convenient" to transit with multiple subway lines within a block, this historic gem melds "architectural prestige" with downtown accessibility.
