Description

900 Fifth Avenue was designed in 1960 by architect Sylvan Bien, known for his mid-century modern residential buildings throughout the Upper East Side. Other works include 860 Fifth (1950), 923 Fifth (1951), and 605 Park (1954). Earlier in his career, Sylvan Bien designed the elegant Hotel Carlyle (1930), and accompanying Carlyle Apartments (1931).

Robert, his son, became a partner in his father's firm in 1950, and shares credit for the mid-century work. Enviably positioned at the corner of E. 71st Street and Fifth Avenue, 900 Fifth is across the street from both Central Park and the Gilded Age mansion built by Industrialist Henry Clay Frick. The Frick residence occupies the entire block between E. 70th and 71st Streets, and was completed in 1914.

Now housing the Frick Collection Museum and Library, it is a National Landmark and also on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The grand architecture and outdoor gardens of the Frick are considered one of New York's treasures, and the entire area is part of the Upper East Side Historic District. There are only three apartment lines within 900 Fifth; the A-line and B-line both directly face Central Park; the C-line faces East 71st Street.

The higher floors clear the Frick and have substantial Central Park and Midtown views. Apartment 7C is a Classic Six with a clear view and is luxuriously spacious; estimated to be 2000 square feet. Architect Bien was quoted to say that his client, developer William R. Buxbaum, wanted a distinctive and classy building, and this apartment has glamorous original features such as a private elevator landing, a large rectangular entry gallery, a guest powder room, two large bedrooms with en suite baths, a grandly-scaled formal dining room, long galley kitchen, a staff room with bath, and service entrance.

The Living Room and the larger bedroom face South, with spectacular views over the Frick gardens, Central Park, the skyline of Central Park South, and the lights of Midtown. The windows in the apartment were recently upgraded to building specifications, and the building itself underwent an extensive exterior overhaul recently, replacing the original white ceramic brick with Landmarks-approved soft gray natural brick. Apartment 7C is in original condition and has had only two owners in 60 years.

It is intact and undamaged, but requires a total renovation and restoration. Photos are virtually-staged. Renovation plans are subject to Board Approval. 900 Fifth was built as a co-op and does not allow financing; all-cash buyers only.

International and Pied a Terre buyers are welcomed. Pets under 25lbs allowed. The building's original lobby was redesigned by AD100 Designer Juan Montoya in rich exotic woods, lacquer, and polished stone. Highly professional staff, 24/7 attended lobby, and live-in Manager.

Monthly maintenance includes utilities. There is a gym, storage, two roof terraces with amazing 360-degree views, a bike room, and garage. 2% flip tax paid by Purchaser.
