Description

Meticulously created by interior designer Ken Fulk, a member of Architectural Digest’s AD 100 list of the world’s best in the profession, this sensational penthouse is emblematic of how contemporary design, which increasingly draws as much from the past and the existing world as it does from the future, is creating very high-design spaces that are also supremely pleasant and comfortable to live in.

Indoor and outdoor spaces of the duplex penthouse, including four large terraces, are patterned in much the same way as the terraces found on classic prewar residential buildings of architects such as Rosario Candela. Here the traditional "wedding cake" form of New York residential architecture is created anew with the fresh and striking lines of today’s computer-modeled design. The residence’s multiple outdoor spaces provide open views across Manhattan, from the southern tip of the island and the towering pinnacle of One World Trade Center, all the way to the gigantic leafy rectangle that is Central Park.

Turn-key and exquisitely finished, the residence recently underwent a complete renovation by Fulk.

The private elevator entry and foyer are lined with black cerused oak. In the Great Room, a massive wall of windows looks out onto the West Village, incorporating the living and dining spaces, as well as the open-plan kitchen, into the fabric of the city itself. The kitchen features Breccia Capraia countertops and a full suite of Gaggenau appliances.

It opens to an outdoor terrace, one of three on the first floor.

The second first-floor terrace is a spectacular outdoor space for the private use of the master bedroom, although a door from the adjacent hall is provided for added convenience. This bedroom suite features rich materials such as a maple herringbone wall, and a bathroom clad in full slabs of Arabescato Corchia marble. A walk-in closet is fully outfitted with custom built-in cabinetry.

Finally, the first floor’s third terrace is a petite balcony off the rear of the master suite; the perfect spot for private a tete a tete. A second bedroom and complete second bath fill out the first floor.

Upstairs, the final bedroom is a sensational perch among the rooftops, surrounded by a massive wrap-around terrace, with an outdoor summer kitchen and plenty of entertaining space. The bedroom itself, which does include a private ensuite bath, can be easily used as any variety of living or entertainment spaces, creating an indoor-outdoor entertainment level that feels spectacularly unusual for New York.

Currently used as a media room, it’s easy to imagine it converted into a casual solarium or maybe even a billiard room. Inside is a full wet bar, where one might have a nightcap before slipping into their nearby bed or serve a full complement of cocktails to guests gathering for drinks before dinner downstairs.

Designed and built in 2016 by architecture firm BKSK, 175 West Tenth Street is an intimate building offering residential privacy with only five units, at one per floor, a part-time doorman, private elevator access, and storage space provided for each unit.
