Overview of The Astor at 235 West 75th Street

In 1901, William Waldorf Astor, a prominent turn-of-the-century New York politician, businessman, and philanthropist, erected a magnificent, twin-towered apartment building at 235 West 75th Street. Architects Clinton & Russell adorned the façade with grey brick, carved Beaux-Arts ornament, rounded corners clad in limestone, and an antefix-trimmed copper cornice; a third tower followed in 1914.

In 2015, the pre-war gem has been reborn as The Astor, restored to original grandeur and upgraded for 21st century living with modern amenities such as a fully-attended lobby clad in mosaic and marble, a fitness center, a children’s playroom, and a private viewing park overlooking Broadway. One- to five-bedroom apartments offer gracious layouts, wood-burning fireplaces, custom ceiling moldings and floorboards, and built-in window alcove seats. Kitchens are equipped with state-of-the-art appliances, stained oak cabinetry, and marble countertops and backsplashes.

The Astor is part of an officially-designated historic district and sits close to both Riverside and Central Parks. This prime Upper West Side location is home to beloved cultural institutions such as the Lincoln Center and the American Museum of Natural History, and local favorites such as Zabar’s, Fairway Market, Magnolia Bakery and Alice’s Tea Cup.

Carter’s Review

"This large, gray-brick apartment house at 235 West 75th Street occupies the entire Broadway frontage between 75th and 76th Streets and is one of the handsomest apartment complexes on the Upper West Side.

It was built in 1901 by William Waldorf, son of John Jacob Astor 2nd and the builder of the Waldorf section of the old Waldorf-Astoria Hotel that stood on the present site of the Empire State Building."
