Bushwick Apartments

With a strong art scene, Bushwick is in the midst of significant growth thanks to rising prices pushing young residents out of Williamsburg. Bushwick is surrounded by Williamsburg, Ridgewood (Queens), East New York and Bedford Stuyvesant. Its trendy new vibe has been documented in many pop-culture references, most notably, Lena Dunham's "Girls."

When the Dutch settled in Brooklyn, they named the entire area encompassing modern-day Bushwick, Williamsburg, and Greenpoint "Boswijck." The area was initially used as farmland for food and tobacco. As New York, and subsequently Brooklyn, grew, factories began to pop up in the area. In fact, inventor Peter Cooper, namesake of the famous Peter Cooper Village in Manhattan, built his first factory, a glue-manufacturing plant, in Bushwick.

In the mid-19th century, a large German population migrated to Bushwick, establishing many breweries in the area and creating the 14-block brewery haven "Brewer's Row."

Like much of New York, the area experienced a decline in the wake of World War II. In the early 21st century, New York began pouring its resources into the area for revitalization, addressing deteriorating housing conditions and working to create more economic opportunities.

Today, Bushwick is a growing area that has retained a strong appreciation for the arts. Restaurants and bars are popping up around the area, with as many as eight restaurants recognized in the 2014 Michelin Guide, including Blanca, recipient of a Michelin star. The birthplace of such celebrated personalities as Rosie Perez and Eddie Murphy, Bushwick is gaining momentum.

Bushwick is home to the Catherina Lipsius House, known throughout the area as the Spooky Mansion. The mansion, located on Willoughby and Bushwick Avenues, was given landmark status in June of 2013.

Most recently, a remarkable flip by the Read Property Group is an encouraging sign for Bushwick's growth. The developers flipped a $6 million foreclosure for $58 million in April 2014, after converting the lot into a 127-unit luxury apartment building.

Bushwick boasts a strong education infrastructure with 33 public and private schools. The Bushwick School for Social Justice opened its doors in early 2003. Already, the school has received an "A" rating five years in a row.

Always the artist community, the neighborhood has public and private galleries throughout and during the month of June offers a weekend arts and culture festival, Bushwick Open Studios.
