Carter's Review
This attractive building at 1075 Park Avenue on the southeast corner at 88th Street in the heart of the desirable Carnegie Hill neighborhood was erected in 1923 and converted to a cooperative in 1954.
The 15-story edifice has 56 apartments.
It was designed by George and Edward Blum whose other Park Avenue buildings include 555, 791, 830, 840, 875 and 940.
Bottom Line
A handsome pre-war whose Carnegie Hill entrance has little girls’ heads tucked in the terra-cotta entrance surround.
Description
The red-brick building has a one-and-a-half-story, limestone-and-granite base with a canopied, three-step-up entrance.
A nice feature of the building is that it has paired arched windows on the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th floors that the “Carnegie Hill Architecture Guide” published by Carnegie Hill Neighbors observed gave the building “a soaring, regal quality,” adding that the “window surrounds are leafy and spiral; within the arched lintels terra-cotta urns spill flowers and vines.”
“A row of decorative circles underscores the metal modillioned cornice” and “the classical entryway is capped with a flat cornice over rows of egg-and-dart and dentil moldings, above a floral carved entablature. Look closely at the door surround: in the center of the leafy terra-cotta carvings are small Dutch-girl heads,” the guide noted.
It has stringcourses above the 4th, 7th, 10th and 13th floors and a handsome cornice.
The building, however, has inconsistent fenestration, discrete air-conditioners and no sidewalk landscaping.
Amenities
The building has a doorman, a fitness room, and storage.
It permits pets.
It has no garage and no roof deck.
