Carter's Review

No building on Central Park West has more balconies fronting on Central Park than this 24-story tower 80 Central Park West on the north corner at 68th Street, the first apartment house to be built on the lower portion of the avenue since World War II.

Built in 1967, the building's 173 rental apartments were converted to co-operatives in 1980 and there are now about 160 apartments because some have been combined over the years.

The building was designed by Harry F. Green and Paul Resnick for investors Irving Klein, Michael Hoffman, Julius Hoffman and Pascuale Dario.

Its location, close to Lincoln Center and the park transverse roads, is hard to beat.

It is also known as 1-13 West 68th Street.

Several four-story brownstones were demolished on this site.

Bottom Line

The balconies are clearly the main attraction in this building that bears little trace of the fabulous architectural heritage of Central Park West's great residential towers. The south-corner balconies wrap around the corner to take maximum advantage of the spectacular views of Central Park and the midtown skyline.

Description

The post-war residential building is setback on its east and south sides with landscaped plazas and it has a canopied entrance to a lobby surrounded by metal-covered, two-story columns.

It has also has a terraced setback on the 18th floor.

The beige-brick building’s most notable feature, however, are its many angled balconies, many of which are at the building’s southeast corner.

Amenities

The building has full-time doorman, a live-in superintendent, a sundeck, a large and attractive lobby, and a garage accessible through the building, a laundry room, a bicycle room and a storage room.
