Description
Chelsea Old School Work/Live 1800 sf loft Flooded with light from its 42 ft wall of windows
Calling all artists, painters, filmmakers, fashionistas and photographers who want an original Work/Live loft from the 1970s. The loft is stunning with an expansive 42sf open living room and 11 1/2 foot beamed ceilings. But the most striking feature as one enters the loft is the 42 ft. wall of windows spanning the south and west side of the loft, flooding the loft with light.
Located in the well-known Capital Building, the building's earlier provenance was as a furriers building and many of those original details remain in this loft: polished concrete floors, lot line windows that tilt with the original hardware, and the large entry way door. But don't worry, the kitchen and bath are from the 21st century and very well done. Good news about the maintenance too, its $1 a foot and that's about half what other lofts monthly charges cost per square foot.
Owned by a chef, food stylist, and cookbook author, the loft has been featured in the design mag, Elle Decor. The loft had been a cooking school in one of its reincarnations and looks like it. The kitchen runs along the whole north side of the loft, about 22 feet.
The appliances and overall look is industrial chic: there's a 30-inch stainless steel Wolf stove, B and B Italia kitchen cabinets, a 36-inch Subzero fridge, a large farmhouse stainless kitchen sink, tons of counter space and a Carrara marble counter. The backsplash is tile and there's an enormous 12-foot island which is a vintage 19th century oak drafting table.
While it's a one bedroom, there are distinct areas in the loft tastefully separated by white floor to ceilings built-ins that also create a lot of interior storage, an area for a home office while dividing the living room and bedroom.
Its versatile layout easily allows for a 2nd bedroom to be carved out and not take away from the scale of the living room. The master bedroom is oversized measuring 18 ft. x 23 ft., with a row of windows running the expanse of the room. The storage is plentiful and there's 15-foot-long walk in closet running the length of the bedroom.
There's additional basement storage available too.
The present bath is double the size of most baths, allowing for a separate free standing 6-foot oval tub and a separate walk in shower. The walls are tiled with white tile and the shower has an exposed Barber Wilson English shower fixture and a French belle epoch porcelain 32 inch pedestal sink with beautiful ceramic legs.
A second bathroom is an easy addition to the space as there are closets adjacent to this bath that could be easily converted. Outside the bath, there's a closet with a washer drier.
While 236 West 26th Street is a co-op building, attention CONDO buyers: it's a flexible co-op which permits sublets, live/work, is pet friendly.
The lobby is renovated with all of the original 1920s brass detail and terrazzo floors. There are 25 units, 10 floors, 3 elevator banks, a beautifully furnished roof deck with Empire State views, video intercom security and a fob controlled elevator. Basement storage is available and the building has a flip tax.
The building is conveniently located near Whole Foods, Trader Joe's and Fairway. In addition to this, Chelsea is home to some of the top restaurants, galleries, shopping and entertainment options. Also nearby are many subway lines. The entrance for the C train is just literally 50 FEET from the front door at 26th and 8th Avenue.
