Carter Horsley's Building Review Carter Horsley
Dec 23, 2011
72 CITYREALTY RATING

Carter's Review

One of the city's handsomest pre-war apartment building conversions, the Chelsea Atelier at 245 Seventh Avenue on the northeast corner at 24th Street, was erected in 1911 and designed by Squires & Wynkoop.

The 12-story building was converted to 33 residential condominiums in 1997 by Harry Macklowe.

The building has a prime Chelsea location directly across from a large Whole Foods store and one block north subway and bus stops.

Bottom Line

An extremely handsome, mid-rise residential condominium building with spacious apartments in Chelsea across from a large Whole Foods store and very close to public transportation.

Description

The building has a brownstone, two-story, pillow-rusticated base beneath a decorative bandcourse.  The third floor has decorative escutcheons between its windows and is capped by another bandcourse.

The fourth through the 10th floors have beige-brick façades.

There is a decorative bandcourse above the 10th floor and a thinner one above the 12th floor.  There are decorative spandrels beneath the windows on the 11th floor.

The top of the building flares outward as it rises with five large curved and inset coves between small square rustication.  The coves have center escutcheons surmounted by circular elements flanked by angular elements.

There is a thin, plain copper cornice at the top of the building above the rusticated flare.

The building has a small canopied entrance flanked by light sconces.

Amenities

The building has a full-time doorman, an on-site superintendent, bicycle storage, storage and pets are permitted.  It has no garage, no sidewalk landscaping and an exposed rooftop watertank.
