Carter's Review
This pleasant, 14-story apartment building at 1270 Fifth Avenue on the northeast corner at 108th Street was erected in 1957 as the first middle-income co-operative apartment house in Manhattan under Section 213 of the National Housing Act that authorized Government-insured loans to private developers of co-operative housing. The act was passed in 1950 and between then and 1957 about 22,000 co-operative apartments were erected in the New York metro region, but none in Manhattan.
The building has 202 apartments.
Paul Dennis and Victor Schwebel were the sponsors.
H. Herbert Lillien and Clarence Lillien were the architects.
Bottom Line
Close to the lovely Harlem Meer and the impressive Conservatory Gardens, both in Central Park, this building is also convenient to several museums and institutions on Fifth Avenue.
Description
The rose-colored, brick building has some landscaping on its Fifth Avenue frontage and a great deal on its 108th Street frontage which is highlighted by its black fences.
The building has a canopied entrance on the avenue and discrete air-conditioners. The avenue façade has a center indentation but its canopy is just to the south of it.
