Carter's Review

Altes House at 324 East 4th Street between avenues C and D in the East Village was a 1920, 4-story, red-brick building to which three floors with a white façade were added in 2016.

The condominium development has 11 apartments.

Mortar Architecture & Design designed the building and Anthony Morena is a principle is the development.  Mr. Morena was formerly with Joseph Pell Lombardi & Associates, an architectural firm specializing renovations.

Bottom Line

An attractive expansion of a red-brick, mid-block building with a three-story white addition in the East Village.

Description

The building has a 9-step-up stoop entrance.

The building lobby and each kitchen is finished with reclaimed wood from the original building.  The roof deck has a cypress wood trellis.

Amenities

The building has a virtual doorman, a roof deck, a live-in superintendent, a gym, a laundry, a package room, and a limestone-clad lobby and elevator. The building is smoke-free.

Apartments

Kitchens have walnut cabinetry and Carrara marble surfaces, and Bertazzoni Pro ranges.  Bathrooms have Calcutta gold tiles and stainless steel tower warmers.

Apartment 2A has an entry hall that leads to a bedroom with the front yard in one direction and a pass-through kitchen, living room and another bedroom in the other.

Apartment 6B is a one-bedroom unit with a 9-foot-long entry foyer that leads past an 8-foot-wide, pass-through kitchen to a 13-foot-long living room with a 10-foot-wide balcony.

Apartment 6A is a one-bedroom unit with a 16-foot-long living room with an open, pass-through kitchen.

History

An October 9, 2015 article in The New York Times by C. J. Hughes noted that “provocative artwork, some depicting Cubist nudes, children’s toys and explosives, that was splashed across wall in the empty building…has been professionally photographed for posterity” and buyers “will receive these framed photos as gifts to preserve the building’s legacy.
