Carter Horsley's Building Review Carter Horsley

Carter's Review

This handsome, 16-story former industrial building at 1182 Broadway midway between 28th and 29th Streets was converted in 2017 by Mocal Enterprises to 39 condominiums on the top floors and five commercial floors at its base.

The building, which was erected circa 1910 and designed by William L. Rouse, is known as the Centurian and should not be confused with the Centurion, a new development condominium project designed by Pei Freed Cobb in 2010 at 33 West 55th Street.

BuiltN Studios did the interior design for the conversion.

Bottom Line

In recent years, this area of Chelsea has become increasingly popular with the opening of Mario Batali’s Eataly at 200 Fifth Avenue and the Ace Hotel at 20 West 29th Street and the Nomad Hotel on the southeast corner of 28th Street and Broadway.

Description

The very attractive building has an imposing entrance and a cornice and is located between two new, chic hotels in this wholesale notions district that is very close to Madison Square Park and excellent public transportation.

Amenities

The building has a concierge, a doorman, a roof deck, a bicycle room and a laundry.

Apartments

Apartments have high ceilings, Sub-Zero refrigerators, and Bosch cooktops and washers/dryers. The building’s original copper window frames have been preserved and restored

Residence B on floors t6 through 12 is a one-bedroom unit with a long entry foyer that leads to the bathroom and bedroom that flow on to an open kitchen and living/dining space at the building’s northwest corner.

Residence A on floors 6 through 12 is a one-bedroom unit with an entry foyer next to a pass-through kitchen next to a large living/dining room adjacent to the long corner bedroom.

In 2010, the building was found to be an illegal loft conversion by the Department of Buildings and its residents had to be relocated.  Mocal subsequently installed smoke detectors, a sprinkler system and a secondary emergency staircase.
