Carter's Review

This handsome 8-story building at 9 Barrow Street at Seventh Avenue South in the West Village was erected in stages starting in 1897.  It was completed in 1911 and has 86 co-operative units.  

The landmark designation for the Greenwich Village Historic District noted that "this dignified eight-story loft building (also Nos. 186-192 West Fourth Street) with stores at the ground floor, tells a story of successive enlargements between the year 1897 and 1911, as it was built progressively for Halloran family." 

The building is known now as the Halloran. 

"The first portion was built in 1897 at the corner of West Fourth Street and was designed by Charles Rentz, architect.  The next three additions were made by John P. Voelker, architect, on both sides of the initial structure, including the big addition of 1909 extending from the corner building to include No. 13 Barrow Street," the report continued. 

The building is very near Sheridan Square and a Seventh Avenue subway station.

Bottom Line

With its central West Village location and excellent public transportation, this large building is near Sheridan Square and has double-shift concierge service.

Description

"The stores, at street level, have high windows and cast iron columns with unusual swagged brackets supporting a simple entablature.  The upper stories of the façade on Barrow Street consist of five bays, or divisions, with groups of square-headed windows at each end and in the center, while at either side of the central bay paired tripled-arched windows are introduced for variety at the fourth and top floors.  A deep, bracketed cornice crowns the building and is in turn surmounted by an attic floor above the West Fourth Street corner position," the report noted.

Amenities

The building has a part-time doorman,  a live-in superintendent and 7-day, double-shift concierge service.  The building is pet friendly.

Apartments

Apartments have barrel-vaulted ceilings of more than 10 feet. 

Most are studio and one-bedroom units but most of the penthouses are duplexes. 

The building has laundry rooms on each floor.
