Carter's Review

This attractive, red-brick, 12-story apartment building was erected in 1963 and converted to a cooperative in 1987. It has 113 apartments.

The mid-block building is across the street from the black-glass building of Fox 5 News and from Christie's East and it is just to the west of the row of 11 townhouses by Eli Attia that have slightly curved, granite fronts. The townhouses were developed by Sheldon Solow as part of his black-glass apartment tower complex on Second Avenue at 66th Street. In their excellent book, "The A.I.A. Guide to New York, Fourth Edition," (Three Rivers Press, 2000), Norval White and Elliot Willensky made the following comments about these townhouses and this part of this block:

"These 11 houses fail to capture any of the abundant spirit and charm of their linear antecedents, a boring line of richness in materials and architectural poverty. But directly opposite is a row of gems designed for horses, carriages, and grooms...."

This building has a one-story marble base, a doorman, a garage, some bay windows, polished black granite planters, discrete air-conditioners and a canopied entrance with a two-step-down vestibule that leads to a nice lobby.

The building has a central Upper East Side location that is not far from the area's many fashionable boutiques and restaurants, art galleries and museums, and social clubs. It is close to Hunter College and there is cross-town bus service on this street and 65th Street and a subway station is nearby at 67th Street and Lexington Avenue.
