Description

Very rarely does the opportunity arise to own a home of this caliber with its modern styling and visionary design especially on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. This triplex penthouse perched atop the Blanca Loft Condominium and designed by The Turett Collaborative is one such jewel. It’s soaring, epic interior volumes, thoughtfully considered programmatic elements, and generous exterior spaces (~1,400 SF) on all three of its levels are complemented by a luxurious palette of materials expertly engineered, artfully crafted, and masterfully executed. A key-locked elevator provides private, direct access into the penthouse and immediate entry into a soaring three-story-tall living room.

One’s first impression is that of an impressive two-story tall wall clad entirely in opulent, coursed Vals Quartzite stone which has achieved notoriety through its use at the world-renown Thermal Spa in Vals Switzerland by Pritzker Prize-winning architect, Peter Zumthor. Being the first private residential project in the US to use Vals Quartzite, the stone was hand-selected by the architect at the quarry in Switzerland to ensure the utmost quality. Adapting to suit the function within each room it is located, the stone-clad wall at the living room is carved out to create a 12 foot long concealed gas fireplace lined in blackened steel panels.

The east wall of the living room space is likewise clad in this industrial yet warm blackened steel. These steel walls form the support armature for a striking, custom-designed steel stair with amber resin colored treads and low iron glass guard rails. The resin and glass components allow light from the rooftop terrace and the roof skylights to disperse and refract effortlessly throughout the interior of the penthouse.

The living room’s northern exposure, a 20-foot high wall of north-facing glass, opens directly onto a landscaped private terrace allowing for the seamless blend of interior and exterior living spaces. A sleek, matte white lacquer and Corian clad kitchen, complete with Gaggenau, Miele, and Subzero appliances marry living with dining creating one large space ideal for entertaining. The adjacent powder room is by contrast seductive and intimate, clad in the same blackened steel panels as the living room with a cantilevered Boffi lavatory sink and faucet. Directly behind the kitchen and powder room is a discreet ensuite guest bedroom suite with its own private terrace and a bathroom clad in teak planks that recall the coursing of the Vals Quartzite stone throughout.

The bathroom features a Corian and glass tile clad walk-in shower and steam sauna, a welcome haven of peace and calm. Located on the second floor of the penthouse is the master bedroom suite which includes a generous walk-in closet, a private balcony, and a bedroom featuring a knife-edged ceiling cove to amplify the room’s gracious ceiling height. At the heart of the master suite stands a privacy-glass enclosed cube which is a sight to behold.

At the flip of a switch, opaque walls become transparent revealing the master bathroom key feature, an in-floor bathing pool sculpted entirely out of matte, white Corian. The 300-gallon pool is filled by slots cut discreetly into the pool’s walls. Hidden at the base of the pool is recessed chronotherapeutic light feature.

Overhead, a large stainless steel water feature allows for the creation of multiple rain effects from gentle drizzle to steady downpour. The bathroom includes a custom cut vanity carved from a single slab of Vals Quartzite projecting and cantilevering from the stone feature wall that also winds its way through the bathroom. Each element of the bathroom was carefully designed to celebrate the act of bathing and provides a spa experience unlike any other.

Adjacent to the master bathroom is the master study which cantilever’s effortlessly over the living, dining, kitchen space below. At the third floor of the triplex penthouse, the steel, resin, and glass feature stair culminates in a bridge that spans over the study and the living room, nearly 25’ feet below. The bridge leads to a landscaped roof terrace running the entire length of the penthouse from front to back. As a result, commanding views of the city are provided both to the north and south.
