Carter Horsley's Building Review Carter Horsley
Apr 01, 2013

Carter's Review

This 11-story residential condominium building at 26-26 Jackson Avenue in the Hunter’s Point section of Queens is known as Vere and is distinguished by its rather unusual “exoskeleton” on a couple of its sides that loops over one of its terraces.

The building, which is also known as 44-01 Purves Street, has 43 apartments and was completed in 2009.

It was developed by Henry Zilberman.

It was designed by Robert S. Scarano Jr.

Andres Escobar designed the interiors.

Bottom Line

An elegant, mid-rise, glass tower with a “penthouse gym” that shows off its aesthetic muscles with exterior struts.

Description

A very slick mid-rise glass tower that is enlivened by has some framework “accents” along two of its sides and across much of the top of one of its terraces.

The “accents” are not random remnants of deconstructivist theory but “free-range” adornments that work rather well in creating an unusual “allure” for the development.

To some, they might conjure a playground’s “jungle gym” and a princely pergola and to others mere whimsy, but because the building’s curtain wall is so elegant, not a folly.  They might not be stairways to paradise, but they definitely are an architectural enhancement.

The lobby has a handsome mix of leather and limestone and walnut and ebony.

The building has a doorman, a live-in superintendent, a roof deck and a “sky gym.”
