Carter's Review

This attractive, 7-story building at 255 Bowery between East Houston and Stanton Streets on the Lower East Side and  was completed in 2015 and contains four condominium apartments and two floors of retail.

It was developed by Shaky Cohen and designed by Karl Fischer.

It is one block north of the New Museum and Prince Street and a few doors south of a Whole Foods store.

It is just to the south of the Sperone Westwater Gallery designed by Sir Norman Foster and its modern and glass design nicely complements it.

Bottom Line

Smack in the middle of the “new” Bowery, this small, mid-block building has floor-through apartments and a dramatic façade that nicely complements its taller neighbor, the Sperone Westwater Gallery designed by Sir Norman Foster.

Description

It has a distinctive façade with two black frames outlining two stories of windows, the lower one on the 3rd and 4th floors on the south side of the front façade and the upper one on the 6th and 7th floors on the north side of the façade.

The building’s front façade has two setbacks at the top, which is one floor below the major setback of the building to the north that is outlined in black.  The setbacks combined with the two large black frames create a “stepping” effect when seen next to the adjoining taller building.

This building has a small glass entrance marquee just to the north of its two-story gallery space.

Amenities

The building has a virtual doorman, storage and a laundry.

Apartments

The apartments have polished concrete floors.

The penthouse duplex has an entry foyer that opens onto a 16-foot-long dining area next to a 17-foot-long kitchen and an 11-foot-wide terrace and the foyer also leads a down staircase and a 25-foot-long living room and an 11-foot-long den that opens onto a 10-foot-wide terrace.  The lower level has three bedrooms with one small balcony and the 19-foot-wide master bedroom has an 8-foot-wide terrace.

The two-bedroom, full-floor units have a long hall that leads past an open, 8-foot-wide kitchen with an island to a 19-foot-wide living room with a terrace..
