The conversion of a commercial building at 157 Chambers Street into a 16-story, residential condominium project has been named Artisan Lofts and given the new address of 143 Reade Street.
TriBeCa Associates of which William Brodsky and Elliot Ingerman are principals are the converters of the mid-block building that was erected in the early 1930s and designed by Victor Mayper, who was the architect of several commercial buildings in Lower Manhattan including 155 Sixth Avenue, 121 Varick Street, 160 Varick Street and the Maltz-Franklin Building.
Steven F. Byrns of BKSK Architects is the architect for the conversion, which will create 45 apartments.
TriBeCa Associates is also building a 13-story hotel with 96 hotel rooms and 15 condominium apartments at 128 Chambers Street on the southeast corner at West Broadway.
An article by David Lombino in the November 27, 2006 edition of The New York Sun noted that many of the older commercial properties on Chambers Street are being converted to residential use, citing, among others, planned conversions at 87-9 Chambers Street, 88 Chambers Street, 92 Chambers Street, and renovations at 119, 122 and 148 Chambers Street.
