The historic brick building at 186 North 6th Street in North Williamsburg had long been known as an educational institution until the building was severely damaged by a three-alarm fire in 1982. Boricua College, a notable former resident, has since moved on, and 186 North 6th Street is turning residential.
According to plans filed with the city, the building will rise to six stories and the classrooms and offices will be converted to 60 units. It is not known whether they will be condos or rentals, but eight lower-level apartments will be duplexes. Building amenities will include a roof deck, bike room, and storage. Marvel Architects, known for its work at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and St. Ann’s Warehouse, is the architect of record.
186 North 6th Street is in the heart of Williamsburg, “where demand for new residences continues to thrive, while development opportunities are nearly exhausted,” as per marketing materials. This location is particularly desirable: It is one block away from the Bedford Avenue subway stop, not to mention four blocks from the Metropolitan Avenue subway stop as an L train alternative. It is also a short walk from the dining, shopping, and nightlife of Bedford Avenue.
