A bizarre conversion is proposed at the site of a mixed-use building in Bedford Stuyvesant.
Permits were filed earlier this month for 849 Dekalb Avenue, between Throop Avenue and Marcus Garvey Boulevard, calling for the building's three residential units and store to be converted into five rental-sized units averaging 704 square feet apiece. Its height will stay at 51 feet, or 5 stories, but there will be a setback for a penthouse and outdoor space. Permits have yet to be approved.
The rendering comes to us from Brooklyn-based Baobab Architects, the same firm also responsible for an industrial-inspired Bushwick rental that sports pipe lighting on its exterior. Unfortunately, in the case of 849 Dekalb, the design just doesn't fit in with the changing neighborhood, especially considering there are several new handsome residential developments on the same block, including 836 Dekalb Avenue, Haven at 875 Dekalb Avenue, and the under construction 855 Dekalb Avenue.
