When the Upper East Side’s Surrey Hotel reopens later this year after a pandemic-induced closure, it will open its doors as The Surrey, a Corinthia Hotel, the first Corinthia Group property in the United States. The historic building will house 70 guest rooms, 30 suites, and The Surrey Residences, a collection of condos to start on the 11th floor above the guest rooms. A sales launch and move-ins are estimated for fall 2024.
The 14 units will comprise two- to three-bedroom units plus a duplex penthouse. An offering plan filed in January 2024 did not list a sellout price, but a source told Robb Report that prices are expected to start around $8 million. The hotel rooms and residences alike will feature interiors by Martin Brudnizki Studio, and buyers will be able to choose their own interior design package with furnishings and decor from The Invisible Collection.

The Surrey, a Corinthia Hotel arrival with outdoor restaurant
Residents will enjoy access to the first New York City outpost of Casa Tua; an Italian restaurant will be open to the public in a space once occupied by Cafe Boulud, and a private members’ club will take place on the second floors. Additional amenities will include a state-of-the-art fitness center by AMP and a jewel-box spa with sauna, steam room, and two treatment rooms.
The transformation comes nearly 100 years after The Surrey was built by acclaimed architects Schwartz & Gross and a few short years after the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved the conversion and restoration by BKSK Architects. In its heyday, its discreet service attracted the likes of President John F. Kennedy and Academy Award-winning actresses Bette Davis and Claudette Colbert. More recently, British developers Reuben Brothers bought the hotel for $150 million in December 2020.

View of Upper East Side architecture and Central Park In addition to dazzling city views, many residences will have glimpses of Central Park
The rich and famous were undoubtedly drawn to The Surrey’s discreet service, not to mention its prime Upper East Side address between Fifth and Madison Avenues. This puts it in close proximity to Central Park, Museum Mile, Madison Avenue designer flagship stores, and Michelin-starred restaurants.

It is also close to some of New York’s most in-demand real estate. Park and Fifth Avenues are fairly lined with prestigious cooperatives, but a new class of condominiums has taken shape in recent years. In anticipation of the launch of The Surrey Residences, we look at the most prestigious condominiums on the Upper East Side Gold Coast (defined here as Park to Fifth Avenues, and East 59th to 79th Streets).

"The overall composition and massing is very sophisticated and appealing" — Carter Horsley

Decades after 737 Park Avenue was constructed for Samuel Minskoff, developer Harry Macklowe converted it to condominium ownership with an array of amenities like a skylit fitness center, a children's playroom, and an entertaining garden. A 24-hour doorman and elevator operators are on staff, and the building's greatest perk may be its address on the corner of Park Avenue and East 71st Street

The Upper East Side was ground zero for the shift from single-family houses to multi-family apartment buildings, but The Curzon House offers the best of both worlds: A group of prewar townhouses was combined to form a new condominium complex, and residents enjoy timeless elegance and grand proportions in their apartments.
