Ever since the Wonder Foods warehouse formerly on 510 Driggs Avenue was demolished in 2006, the site known as a brownfield has somehow managed to rack up a series of noise complaints while standing vacant (h/t Bklyner). However, to the relief of locals, construction of a new six-story building on the abandoned site is set to begin this year with completion estimated for 2020.
The original design by ODA Architecture was highly reminiscent of the firm’s work on The Rheingold and compared to a “stack of boxes” by Curbed. However, the new design by Woods Bagot features a subtler façade while still incorporating strong lines and square shapes.
According to an interview with Woods Bagot’s Michael Casey, the design will incorporate native materials to fit into the formerly industrial nature of the area. The team has also “taken a bit of McCarren Park”: Of the 44 studio through three-bedroom apartments, 25 are expected to have private outdoor space. Permits filed with the city state that amenities in this elevator building will include a laundry room, parking garage, bike room, storage, mail room, package room, and roof deck.
Now that the L train shutdown has been officially cancelled, future residents will appreciate living only one block from the Bedford Avenue L subway stop. They will also appreciate living three blocks from McCarren Park and within easy access to an incredible selection of restaurants, coffee shops, and bars on surrounding blocks. An offering plan has not yet been filed, but Williamsburg condo median prices range from $849K for studios to $2.495 million for three-bedrooms (per CityRealty listings).
