As the first new building on Cook Block in nearly 40 years, not to mention its first condominium, expectations were high for 27 East 79th Street. With design credentials that include the private salons of Élysée Palace in Paris and the Lanesborough and Dorchester hotels in London, Cabinet Alberto Pinto was up to the challenge of creating a design that would make an impression without being overly disruptive to the surrounding architecture. They teamed up with HTO Architect, architect of record, to simultaneously pay homage to the historic street and set the building apart.

“This building is for a discerning and sophisticated buyer who wants to live in a residence that evokes the feel of a European townhouse,” says Linda Pinto of Cabinet Alberto Pinto in an interview with Architectural Digest. Its design features a pale limestone façade, custom lanterns designed by French artisans, and an elaborate ironwork entry. Interior hallways are clad in Belgian granite.
The Parisian-inspired design comes through in the interiors as well. The building’s first residence to come on the market is a full-floor, two-bedroom, 2.5-bath condo on the fifth floor listed for $5.25 million. Upon arrival by direct elevator entry, the owner is greeted with custom baseboard moldings, ceiling cornices, white oak parquet de Versailles flooring, and sweeping Manhattan views through elegantly arched windows. The European kitchen is outfitted with custom-cerused brushed oak cabinetry, marble countertops and backsplash, La Cornue range, and Miele and Sub-Zero appliances. The bathrooms feature various types of marble as well as polished nickel fixtures, custom cabinetry, vanities outfitted with parchment and lacquer or Movingui wood. The building’s outstanding location puts Central Park to the west and prestigious Madison Avenue shopping to the east.
