At the crossroads of Kaufman Arts Districts and the shops of Steinway Street, the steel frame of 6-floor mixed-use building rises. The forthcoming building addressed at 34-11 Steinway Street will accommodate 57 rental apartments, ground-floor retail, office space and a 10,000 square-foot community center. There will also be a 125-car parking garage below ground.
As of early July, the shorter wing along 41st St. is fully up and the residential portion along Steinway Street is rising. The project replaces a one-floor strip of retail that included a furniture store, a UFC GYM, and several restaurants. The new building, designed by Maspeth-based Angelo Ng & Anthony Ng Architects Studio, will feature a clean, modern and somewhat generic exterior of metal panels in varying colors and large expanses of glass — a facade you just know won't age well. Some apartments on the top floor will have terraces and a trellis-like cornice will crown the structure.
