Every year, the World Architecture Festival, the largest international architectural event on the planet, celebrates hundreds of the world’s most forward-looking architectural concepts. Hundreds of projects are shortlisted in numerous categories, and afterward, the architects present their schemes in ten minutes to a three-person jury. This year’s festival, held in Berlin, chose Hill West Architects’ “Consulate and Permanent Mission to the United Nations” as one of nine finalists in the future civic architecture category. The ultimate winner in the category was EdgeARCH’s “Consulate Building, Staff Housing & School Complex” in Karachi, Pakistan.
We can assume the project is still under wraps since the competition materials do not name the consulate the tower is being designed for. Based on the renderings, the site is located at 215 East 38th Street at the corner of Tunnel Exit Street in Murray Hill. The building rises approximately 20 floors tall and will be covered in a façade of vertical fins and full-height windows. The fins alternate in density throughout portions of building and is perhaps governed by programmatic uses within the building. Several outdoor spaces are interspersed throughout the design, including a setback at the sixth floor.
No recent demolition or construction permits are on record for the properties but city records show that KENT 38TH ST LLC picked up the two buildings at the site in early 2016. Other consulate projects underway include the Turkevi Center 821 United Nations Plaza, a 200,000 square foot mission, consulate, and residential building for the Republic of Turkey; and the United Arab Emirates consulate is reportedly working with Fisher Brothers on a 27-floor tower at 315 East 46th Street
