According to Marriott, “every stay is a chance for a new discovery” at its Renaissance Hotels brand. In Chelsea, one of those discoveries got a little closer: A towering 40-story, 330-room outpost at 112 West 25th Street has just topped out, and a glass facade is on the way up as well. Late last week a flag was pitched atop the approximately 450-foot-tall structure.
Unused neighboring development rights allowed developer Lam Group and designer Nobutaka Ashihara to literally think a little bigger: It is one of the tallest in the area with plenty of room for the restaurant and bar, courtyard, meeting room, and small outdoor pool with lounge seating seen in renderings. Interior designer Stonehill Taylor says it was “inspired by the unique history of its locale in the Garment District and Flea Market Hotels.”

Hotels are said to be “springing up like wildflowers” in the area once known as the Flower District, and more seeds have been planted: A block away from the site at 142 West 24th Street, work has begun on a 45-story, 520-key hotel developed by Sam Chang and designed by Gene Kaufman. And after a deal with Soho Properties fell through, Lam Group filed plans to build a 38-story, 360-key hotel at 113 West 24th Street, behind its Marriott Renaissance.
As its Chelsea hotels rise, Lam Group has added an uptown project to its portfolio: It is a partner in 233 West 125th Street, which will be the tallest building in Harlem and home, in part, to another Marriott Renaissance hotel.
