A mansion is rising from the literal ashes of a former four-story townhouse at 34 East 62nd Street in the Upper East Side Historic District. As some may remember, the site was once home to Dr. Nicholas Bartha, who, amidst a bitter divorce battle, attempted suicide by destroying his townhouse via a gas explosion and later succumbed to his injuries. The site ended up in the hands of The Woodbine Company, who purchased it for $11.9M in 2015, significantly less than the $40M asking price.

A year later, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved the design proposal by HS Jessup Architecture for a faux-classical five-story, single-family home. While the contextual proposal did pass, many weren't entirely pleased with the missed creative opportunity since it's facade, albeit well-designed, wasn't honest.
The luxury home will include elements such as light stone, dormers, materials like granite, limestone, and brick. The grand floor plans call for an elevator, garage, five bedrooms, and a master suite that will occupy the fifth floor. According to the construction fence, the project is expected to be completed this month.
