Four years into construction on 30 Hudson Yards, a milestone was achieved earlier this month with the commencement of its soaring observation deck. At 1,100 feet in the sky, the outdoor deck will soon be the highest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, let alone New York City.
New renderings revealed by developers Related Companies and Oxford Properties Group promise a dizzying experience on the deck. Designed by Kohn Pederson Fox, the 7,500-square-foot viewing area will be enclosed by a wide-angled 9-foot glass wall “lens,” providing dramatic vistas of the skyline. Not for the faint-hearted, a window in the floor will provide a bird’s eye view of the neighborhood below.
The developers aren’t the only publishing images of life 1,100 feet off the ground. A few of 30 Hudson Yards’ construction workers have shared behind-the-scenes photos of the making of the observation deck to their Instagram feeds.
Jutting 65 feet away from the 100th floor of nearly 1,300-foot-tall building, the deck is a jigsaw puzzle of sorts, comprised of 15 primary sections of steel and glass. The pieces were first fully assembled in Italy before being broken down and shipped to New York, a practice run of sorts. Varying in weight from 35,000 to 102,000 pounds, the pieces required two cranes to lift them in tandem to their soaring height.
Directly inside from the space, London-based hospitality group rhubarb has been commissioned to design a unique event space, featuring a 10,000-square-foot bar, restaurant, and staging area.
30 Hudson Yards is due for completion in 2019 when it will officially leave its record-breaking mark on the 26-acre development.
