For New York-Presbyterian Hospital, the countdown is on for the April 30 opening of the David H. Koch Center at 1283 York Avenue (between East 68th and 69th Streets). A record-breaking $100 million lead gift from its namesake philanthropist supported the construction of the 750,000-square-foot, multi-specialty ambulatory care center. The hospital says at the facility patients will be cared for “from diagnosis to treatment to aftercare." Services will include cancer treatment, care for digestive diseases, interventional radiology, outpatient surgery, diagnostic and a wellness center. Its use of the most advanced technologies makes it possible to offer care on an outpatient basis.
New York-Presbyterian acknowledges that design plays a strong role in these goals, and that’s where AIA Award-winner Pei Cobb Freed & Partners (PCF) comes in. Unobstructed paths through the 40-foot-high lobby offer easy access to reception and elevators. It is broken up by a mezzanine offering a multipurpose gathering space with food service and a direct connection to an adjoining wellness center. An open-air staircase leads to a more private upper mezzanine that serves as a “living room” for patients and their families. Clinical support spaces are patient-focused and flexible enough to accommodate future technologies and changes in care.
In addition to the interiors, PCF designed the 17-story building’s exterior envelope. An all-glass façade floods the interiors with light. The insertion of a wood screen in the energy efficient, triple-glazed assembly gives the curtain wall a distinctive character. It is seeking LEED Gold certification.
