The Landmarks Preservation Commission has declared that no action will be taken on the newest design for the Domino Sugar Refinery at 292-314 Kent Avenue in Williamsburg. As per a request from the last hearing, Vishaan Chakrabati of Practice of Architectural Urbanism (PAU) presented a new, enlightened design that nestled a new glass building inside the old one with a gap to introduce light and regularize the floors. More details on the new design can be found at 6sqft.
The Waterfront Alliance, Landmarks Conservancy, Municipal Art Society of New York, and New Yorkers for Parks all spoke in favor of the plan; the Historic Districts Council was strongly against it. Likewise, there were mixed feelings among commissioners. Some thought that the new building reduced the historic landmark to a ruin; others appreciated how it paid homage to the past while putting in modern accommodations. Nevertheless, concerns about the preservation of newly exposed fabric led the commission to take no action at this time.
