Red Hook, the sleeper hit that was named New York City's ninth most expensive neighborhood in 2017, has come a long way since Hurricane Sandy devastated the area nearly six years ago. It was described as "up-and-coming" even before the storm hit, thanks to its exclusive, full-frontal Statue of Liberty views, slew of hipster-like small businesses, major retail destinations like Ikea and Fairway, and surprisingly, a burgeoning art scene. The isolated northwestern Brooklyn neighborhood offers several art galleries, including Pioneer Works and Red Hook Labs, and soon, another will sprout up at 202 Conover Street.
Renderings of the nearly 4,000-square-foot art gallery space have surfaced on OPerA Studio's website, revealing a nautical-inspired vision fit for the waterfront area. According to the firm's project description, the two-story gallery space will serve as a non-profit exhibition and event space for Michel Cohen's Tribeca Pediatrics to support the arts. Cohen and OPerA are also collaborating on 454 Carroll Street, an 8-story mixed-use manufacturing designed to be converted to residential after Gowanus' rezoning.
The gallery's unique fin-like form "evokes ships’ sails, currents and tides" and is designed to allow indirect north light into the upper-level spaces through a series of repetitive roof monitors. Deep side lights located on the first and second floors will also allow for plenty of southern light.
202 Conover Street will be a modular structure; the facade and roof elements are to be constructed as 7 pre-fabricated pieces which will then be lifted and assembled on-site.
Permits were approved in late April and construction has already begun.
