Earlier this month, we reported that more than
2,000 apartments are in the works for Coney Island. Among the most ambitious is
Surf Vets Place, a mixed-use affordable and retail complex to transform a derelict block at the corner of West 21st Street and Surf Avenue. Construction is already well underway for the
first phase of the project: a nine-story, 135-unit supportive housing building with 82 studio apartments reserved for homeless veterans. Now the developers, Georgica Green Ventures and Concern for Independent Living, have submitted plans to start the next phase.
The
new building application filed at 2006 Surf Avenue calls for a 20-story tower with 216 apartments spread across 180,000 square feet of residential floor area. The residential experts at
Stephen B. Jacobs Group (SBJG) are helming the design. Previously released renderings show a traditional design comprised of corner towers connected by mid-rise wings on two separate blocks. All of the buildings will overlook a central courtyard and amenities are to include a fitness center, rooftop terrace, laundry room, and bike storage. There will also be a 102-car parking garage on the first and second floors.
Residents will be steps away from the world-famous boardwalk and beach, and very close to the Brooklyn Cyclones stadium and Luna Park. Surf Vets Place's ground level retail will also seek to engage residents and visitors with large show windows and colorful awnings.
