Located at 112 East 75th Street on the Upper East Side, the mid-1960s building occupied by Temple Israel of the City of New York (founded in 1870) no longer serves the needs of the congregation - and since 2012, PBDW Architecture has been engaged with stakeholders to modernize and expand the existing structure.
The building will be topped with a four-story addition for educational programming and a new facade will be applied (also to the existing structure) made of clear and multicolor dichroic glass and Jerusalem limestone panels. The architecture firm has proposed a "cutting edge synagogue for the 21st century" that can be configured for varying uses and will include an expandable chapel for High Holy Days, and the main chapel will be modified to make the space more usable. Check out more renderings below.
