Plans for Sutton Tower date back to 2015, when developer Bauhaus Group started buying up low-rise buildings and nearby air rights to build a new skyscraper. As rumors swirled of a nearly 1,000-foot-tall tower designed by Foster + Partners, locals objected and lobbied for a rezoning that would prevent such tall buildings from rising in the neighborhood. But in 2016, developer Gamma Real Estate bought the site for $98 million in a foreclosure auction and filed permits for a new building shortly after. In the years since construction commenced, JVP Management also signed on as a developer.

While the Sutton Place rezoning passed, Sutton Tower was nevertheless allowed to rise. The 847-foot-tall tower is shorter than originally planned, but still outstrips The Sovereign as the tallest residential building in Beekman/Sutton Place and stands second only to 432 Park Avenue as Midtown East's tallest building. However, Sutton Tower's limestone facade adds a highly contextual touch. It is further distinguished in the local skyline by its beveled corners and striking Art Deco-inspired crown. The building houses 121 units and the 22,000-square-foot Sutton Club amenity suite.
Robb Report has described Sutton Place as "Little London" for its distinguished atmosphere and waterfront parks. Indeed, the new building is only one block from Sutton Park. It is also located in excellent proximity to Bloomingdale's, the interior design showrooms lining Third Avenue, the Roosevelt Island tramway, the East 57th Street Whole Foods, and the Landmarks-approved Trader Joe's in the former Bridgemarket space that has been described as the city's most beautiful supermarket.
