For decades, Manhattan's Upper East Side and Upper West Side were seen as bastions of high society and home to some of the city's most impressive real estate. The past week's top sales offered a look back at that, with a four-bedroom penthouse at the prewar-inspired 150 East 78th Street leading the charge at a $33,432,313 asking price. Further downtown, just as the boundaries of Midtown East give way to Lenox Hill, a full-floor home near the top of The Leyton also figured in among the top sales with a $11,775,000 closing price.
On the Upper West Side, it was a good week for 378 West End Avenue, which combines a new tower with a Schwartz & Gross-designed building dating back to 1915: A total of $30,975,000 in sales were recorded across three units last week; among them was an $11,950,000 penthouse with four bedrooms, three and a half baths, 3,220 interior square feet, and 1,113 square feet of private outdoor space spread across two private terraces.
However, for all the nostalgia for New York glamour of yesteryear, newly hip neighborhoods continue to beckon. The top downtown sale and second-highest overall took place at Madison House, where #PH62 closed for $20,159,813. As per the offering plan, this unit at the top of NoMad's current tallest building features four bedrooms, four and a half baths, and 5,511 square feet.
