As the South Street Seaport continues towards its much-anticipated rebirth, NYC residents and tourists will naturally want to be a part of it. To that end, a rental tower is thriving at 2 Gold Street; on the same block, Lam Group is building a ground-up, 40-story Marriott hotel at 215 Pearl Street. A 200-room Courtyard will be perfect for short business and leisure trips, while a 120-room Residence Inn was designed for extended stays.
According to plans filed with the city, amenities for guests will include ground-floor retail, meeting rooms, a restaurant and bar, a fifth-floor fitness center, and a roof deck. The building was expected to open in January 2014, but was delayed for unknown reasons. However, a recent site visit shows that construction appears to have topped out.
One would think the Marriott Courtyard and Renaissance Inn at 1715 Broadway by the hotel's original designer, Nobutaka Ashihara Architect, would give an idea of what this hotel would look like. However, Gene Kaufman Architect took over the project and, rather than taking design cues from its shimmering uptown sister, disappointingly drew inspiration from Lam Group's Four Points Sheraton hotel next door at 10 Platt Street, where the nicest thing The Real Deal could say is "at least this...is better than the parking lot it replaced": Renderings show a truly uninspired metal and brick facade with smaller windows than a visitor might like.
