The XI, a dramatic, two-building addition to the downtown skyline, has slowly taken shape between the Hudson River and the High Line all summer long. Now the west tower, the taller of the two at 34 stories, has topped out, and glass is going in, bringing Bjarke Ingels’ vision closer to fruition. According to the building’s website, this structure, to be known as Tower No. X, will be wholly residential with 149 units. They will have interiors by Gilles & Boissier.
Tower No. I, the smaller, 25-story tower, is well on the way up. In addition to 87 beautifully appointed apartments with interiors by Gabellini Sheppard Associates, it will be home to the first Six Senses hotel in the United States. While no two floor plans will be exactly alike, all apartments and hotel rooms will look out on sweeping city and Hudson River views.

The two buildings will be connected by a sky bridge that will be home to a residential lounge and gallery. Additional amenities will include a gracious port-cochere, a wine-tasting room, a game room, a 4,000-square-foot fitness center with a 75-foot pool, and priority access to Six Senses’ offerings. An accepted offering plan lists a stunning sellout of $1.964 billion; to that end, the one- through five-bedroom apartments will range from $2 million to more than $10 million.
The XI is rising on a rapidly developing stretch of West Chelsea. Permits were just filed to construct a one-floor office addition to the massive Manhattan Mini-Storage facility directly south of the site. One block away, the foundation is in place for Thomas Heatherwick’s 515 West 18th Street. Further south, construction is wrapping up on the new development at Pier 57, where Google will be the anchor tenant. And after a long hiatus, the newly resurrected Pier 55 is well underway.
