After more than 30 years, three children, and several awards, Susan Sarandon has listed her Chelsea duplex for $7.9 million. The 6-bath, 5.5-bath co-op spans 6,061 square feet across the seventh and eighth floors of the building, allowing for incredible views and flexibility. The Academy Award-winning actress told The Wall Street Journal she’s “heartbroken” to sell, but that it is too big for her needs now that her children have moved out. However, that is not to say she is saying good-bye to New York - she has already announced plans to downsize to a smaller unit nearby.

Just as changing family circumstances prompted Ms. Sarandon to put the apartment on the market, her growing family led her to it in 1991 - she and then-partner Tim Robbins purchased the apartment when she was expecting her second child and in search of a larger home. The couple combined two full-floor units into one grand home connected by a staircase, and would host many parties, artists, and long-term visitors over the years. The celebrations culminated in “one last fling” on New Year’s Eve 2019 for anyone who had ever visited or stayed in the apartment.
The apartment is located in a nine-story building known as La Fabrique. It was completed as an industrial building in 1923 and, in one of the earlier examples, converted to a boutique cooperative in 1987. Its 13 units comprise half- and full-floor units as well as a penthouse. While not as amenity-rich as its condo counterparts, its address on the cusp of Chelsea, Greenwich Village, and the Flatiron District more than makes up for it, allowing residents easy access to Union Square Park and some of the best dining, shopping, culture, and transportation in Manhattan.
The home's five and a half baths include a royal blue full bath known as "the Academy Awards bathroom."
The apartment is reached via key-locked elevator, and the family's handprints were embedded in a pillar by the entrance much like this one.
The massive living space dubbed "the field" hosted children’s theater pieces and celebrity dance performances alike, and the curved staircase allows for built-in audience seating.
The loft's high ceilings and incredible light are a plant-lover's dream. (Sorry, fiddle-leaf fig trees not included.)
The open kitchen and expansive dining area allow for comfortable entertaining of all types of guests.
The fireplace is the natural centerpiece for all kinds of gatherings, including the “camping party” Eva Amurri, Ms. Sarandon's daughter, hosted here as a child.
A corner office with built-in shelves and Union Square views is perfect for reading scripts, hosting a production office, or planning one’s next venture (table tennis club, anyone?).
The master suite enjoys jaw-dropping views from the bed, the private balcony, and the soaking tub.
No awards in the master bath, but look at those views from the shower!
A custom staircase leads to a private guest floor with three bedrooms, two baths, and a den or playroom.
A second kitchen on the guest floor opens up to a private 43' terrace.
Unobstructed views to the south let the ever-evolving Lower Manhattan skyline take center stage.
The apartment’s northern exposures look out on the Empire State Building and beyond.
