When streets closed to car traffic to allow for safe social distancing early in the Covid pandemic, some wondered if this was the beginning of a new era for New York City. Over a year later, at least one temporary street closure is about to become permanent: The Meatpacking District BID announced plans to implement hexagon-shaped planter barricades to keep out car traffic on Gansevoort Street, Little West 12th Street, and West 13th Street between Ninth Avenue and Washington Street. The move comes almost exactly two years after new public plazas opened to make the Meatpacking District more pedestrian friendly, and just days before Summer Streets, New York’s annual car-free event.
While there are no plans to make Summer Streets a year-round event, the city has proposed a renovation for Park Avenue that could include such changes as bringing chairs and benches back to the Park Avenue malls, creating room for bike lanes and walking paths, and even eliminating traffic lanes altogether. This would mark a return to Park Avenue’s origins as the city’s first linear park, only to see it shaved down in 1927 to accommodate the city’s growing car culture.
In this article:
Between the potential for clearer air and quality of life, some are ecstatic about the changes. However, others are wondering if it’s going too far and alienating those who own a car out of necessity rather than as a luxury. Neighborhoods without ready access to public transportation might feel a little cooler about anything that keeps them from easily navigating the city, and car owners have already lost thousands of parking places between pre-Covid initiatives to introduce new bike lanes and pedestrian plazas and the popularity of the Open Streets and Open Restaurants programs.
With this in mind, deeded parking has emerged as a must-have amenity for some city drivers. Not only do the building's garages mean never having to worry about alternate side parking or brushing snow off the car again, but deeded spaces prevent residents from stealing each other's spots. Below, see a selection of listings with deeded parking among the amenities.
