Notable names who are linked to NYC residential transactions in October 2024 Notable names who are linked to NYC residential transactions in October 2024
In late October 2024, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was ordered to turn over his valuables to two Georgia election workers he defamed in the wake of the 2020 presidential election as part of a massive lawsuit. These included a penthouse apartment at 45 East 66th Street, a prestigious Upper East Side cooperative.

Mr. Giuliani first tried to offload the apartment starting in summer 2023, when he listed it for $6.5 million, and it was on and off the market at gradually lower prices ever since. He filed for bankruptcy during this time, but a judge threw out the case in July 2024, clearing the way for assets like the penthouse to be seized. Before the judge ruled that he must surrender his assets, the penthouse hit a new low price of $5,175,000.
Most recently, when the election workers visited the penthouse to assess transportation and storage needs for the property, they found it emptied of almost all its contents, including some art, sports memorabilia, and furniture that were part of the settlement (h/t NBC New York). Mr. Giuliani and his lawyers are not answering questions about the location of the valuables, and a hearing on the matter is scheduled for Thursday, November 7.

In general, it is not nearly this complicated to buy an apartment or townhouse from a public figure — which is fortunate, because many have chosen to make New York their home at one point or another. The transaction is treated like any other real estate deal, though sometimes with LLCs or trusts to protect the identities of one or both parties. If any furniture or memorabilia is to be included in the sale of a famous property, it is always advised to negotiate this ahead of time as would be the case with any furnished apartment. Below, we look at a selection of homes that were listed or sold by acclaimed actors, visual artists, musicians, and business executives in October 2024.

249 East 61st Street, #TH (Leslie J Garfield & Co Inc)
“Start spreading the news”: A Lenox Hill townhouse once owned by crooner Frank Sinatra has found a buyer. Mr. Sinatra bought the house in 1963, lived there with actress Mia Farrow during their brief marriage, and sold it in 1969 after his wish to build a garage was denied. It is not known how much the sellers paid for it, but the New York Post reports that they lived there for more than 50 years.

From the Listing: This 4-story single-family townhouse boasts 10 rooms, including 4 bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms, spanning a generous 3,730 square feet with an additional 933-square-foot lower level. Held within the family since Sinatra's tenure, this distinguished townhouse presents a rare opportunity for restoration and renewal in the Treadwell Farm Historic District. Originally constructed in 1872 and later modified in 1919 by the renowned architect Frederick Sterner, this residence epitomizes timeless elegance and architectural distinction. Nestled within the heart of Manhattan's Upper East Side, the Treadwell Farm Historic District stands as a testament to the timeless elegance and rich heritage of New York City. See floor plan and full details here.

133 East 95th Street, #TH (Brown Harris Stevens Residential Sales LLC)
Sardi’s is the unofficial center of the Broadway universe for performers, producers, and tourists alike, but its founders chose to live further afield from the Theater District: Local non-profit Carnegie Hill Neighbors notes that 133 East 95th Street, also known as the James H. Ripley House, was once owned by restaurateur Vincent Sardi and his wife Eugenia. Some of Eugenia’s recipes are still served at Sardi’s in the present day, and the townhouse is on the market after the current, unidentified owners have lived there for more than 60 years.

From the Listing: Located on one of the most picturesque blocks in all of Manhattan; this home is one of 27 single-family townhouses included in the active Goat Hill Neighborhood Association. With over 4,400 interior square feet, a 50 foot-deep garden, ceiling heights of nearly 11', 6 bedrooms, and 3 fireplaces; this is a special home. Its unique facade within the neighborhood offers east and west windows on both the parlor and second floors. Throughout, many of the original details are intact and heighten the sense of comfortable grandeur. See floor plan and full details here.

A few weeks before a Christie’s auction of acclaimed designer Mica Ertegun’s art, furniture, and jewelry, the New York Post announced that the combined Upper East Side townhouse she shared with her husband, Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun, had sold. The power couple regularly entertained in their beautifully appointed house, and proceeds from the sale are set to go to their charity.

This very unique and seldom found 37' x 102’ lot that spans both townhouses and encompasses roughly 9,400 square feet above grade is and for sale for the first time in many decades. Whether as a private residence, a live/work space, or a new construction project, the possibilities are as vast as the property’s potential especially in light of the fact that the properties are not landmarked or in a historic district. 19 Downing Street, #TH (Corcoran Group)
About two months after listing it, the Greenwich Village townhouse of Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy entered contract at the asking price. The celebrity couple bought the house for $6.87 million in 2012, ahead of the birth of their first child, and listed it citing the need for more space for their larger family. They declared their intention to stay in New York, but their next move is not known, nor is the identity of the buyer.

From the Listing: As seen in the New York Times, 19 Downing Street is a masterfully designed townhouse with interiors by BKSK, which earned an American Architecture Prize for Interior Design. Originally built in the 1880s, this Greek revival townhouse features four oversized bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms, and three outdoor spaces, ideally located at the crossroads of the West Village, SoHo, and Greenwich Village. When designer/philanthropist Gloria Vanderbilt lived in a 19th-century Upper East Side townhouse in the 1980s through 1990s, she used the greenhouse off the patio garden as a painting studio. It attracted another artistic resident; when the New York Post announced that the house was back on the market, it identified the seller as photographer Priscilla Ratazzi. It was initially listed for $11.99 million in 2022, though Ms. Ratazzi would still make a profit if it sells for the lower price: Ms. Vanderbilt sold it to her for $2.99 million in 1995 so as to pay back taxes.

From the Listing: Located in the Carnegie Hill Historic District, 67 East 91st Street was built in 1891-1892 as one of a pair of houses by G. A. Schellenger. Situated on one of the most desirable tree-lined townhouse blocks, this 19-foot wide turn-of-the-century ivy-covered brownstone has been beautifully updated and yet maintains its old world charm and glamor. Distinguishing features include 6 bedrooms, 6.5 bathrooms, a greenhouse covering the garden, a solarium on the fourth floor, a newly renovated eat-in kitchen and separate pantry, four wood burning fireplaces, an elevator, and a basement complete with laundry and storage. Political drama Madam Secretary was set in Washington DC, but the Federal-style townhouse that served as the exterior of the protagonist’s home is located in the West Village. When Mansion Global announced the listing, it observed that the house was also featured in the movie Big Daddy. Off-screen, it has only had two previous owners, and the sellers bought it for $3 million in 2004.

Unique, 25' wide, and extraordinary 1830 Federal Townhouse historically significant and authentically restored, 18 Commerce offers off-street parking with automatic gates and a private curb cut, allowing you to come and go - a true urban oasis! 245 West 18th Street, #TH (Douglas Elliman Real Estate)
The two-story building at 245 West 18th Street served as the Chelsea Day School at one point, but has garnered more recent attention as the live/work home of dog photographer William Wegman (whose work is on display) and his wife, book publisher Christine Burgin. Crain’s New York Business noted that the couple originally listed it for $16.5 million last year. However, they would still make a generous profit if it closes for the ask, having bought it for $720,000 in 1994.

From the Listing: Located on the north side of 18th Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues, 245 West 18th Street is a 45.5' wide, 2-story tall building consisting of approximately 5,834 square feet of interior space (plus an additional basement) and approximately 18,235 square feet of additional development rights. Mike Myers - Sold

Living room with fireplace and terrace access 505 West 19th Street, #PH1 (Compass)
Windowed kitchen
Private terrace overlooking the High Line
Throughout 2024, actor Mike Myers appears to have garnered more attention for his Downtown real estate portfolio than his film roles: Less than five months after his former penthouse at celebrity favorite 443 Greenwich Street changed hands again in spring 2024, he sold his penthouse overlooking the High Line. While it sold for less than the $20 million he initially sought for it in May 2023, Mr. Myers still makes a profit, having bought it from the developer for $15.35 million in 2017.

From the Listing: This grandly scaled single-floor penthouse with two terraces in the heart of West Chelsea soars above The High Line Park, just moments from The Hudson River Park, positioned equidistant to the West Village/Meatpacking District to the south and Hudson Yards to the north. Expertly designed and laid out by esteemed architect Thomas Juul Hansen, you enter through the 24-hour attended art-filled lobby dramatically nestled beneath the Highline. Two key-locked elevators open directly into the gracious entry foyer or the service entry on the other side. Immediately, you are enraptured by walls of floor-to-ceiling casement windows that illuminate the space with light all day long to the west, east, north, and south, framing equally impressive views of West Chelsea. See floor plan and full details here.

One Madison, #PH (Compass)
Nearly two and a half years, multiple price reductions, and listings on and off the rental market later, the triplex penthouse of media mogul Rupert Murdoch has entered contract. While it was the top deal of the week its contract was signed, the asking price nevertheless represents a deep reduction from the initial $62 million listing price. Moreover, Mr. Murdoch, who moved on to a full-floor home overlooking Central Park in spring 2023, is poised to take a loss, having bought the penthouse from the developer for $43.01 million in 2014.

From the Listing: At the pinnacle of One Madison, the Triplex Penthouse spans almost 7,000 square feet of expansive living space from the 58th to the 60th floor. The striking double-height windows offer panoramic 360-degree vistas of the skyline and both the East and Hudson Rivers. Providing an unparalleled viewpoint of Manhattan and its iconic structures. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, this residential marvel exudes sophistication and timeless elegance. See floor plan and full details here.
