As the reality of New York’s mansion tax sinks in, will cutting prices take some of the sting out? It seems brokers would like to hope so – over 500 listings all over New York had their prices reduced over the past week. While some listings are now out of the danger zone, others mean the new buyer will not have to pay quite so much in extra costs. These include apartments in prominent New York buildings, not to mention a downtown penthouse where Cher was the original owner. Please note that all figures reflect cumulative price cuts and not the most recent reductions.

Cher was the first owner of this corner triplex penthouse in a handsome downtown building that, appropriately enough, was the home of the original Tower Records. Its soaring ceilings, 14 enormous picture windows, wood-burning onyx fireplace, and open chef's kitchen are all befitting of a diva. The crowning glory is a private terrace with outdoor shower and sweeping city views. It's little wonder this fabulous apartment was featured on "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" when Cher lived in it. Following her sale of it in 1990, other previous owners include music mogul Russell Simmons and heiress Byrna Butler. See floor plan and full details here.
