Last week was somewhat quieter than it's been for most of the spring, possibly because of the Memorial Day holiday on May 29. However, a number of jaw-dropping sales nevertheless took place during this time, with the Upper East Side continuing to draw luxury buyers.
Apartment #9/10C, a duplex apartment at the Rosario Candela-designed 1040 Fifth Avenue, had the past week's top sale at $25,000,000, the asking price when it went into contract in December 2022. The listing noted that the apartment has been in the same family for over 50 years; public records linked it to legendary Metropolitan Museum of Art historian/curator Dietrich von Bothmer and his wife, Joyce von Bothmer. The apartment was initially listed for $32 million in April 2021, or roughly a year after Joyce von Bothmer's death.

Around the block, new construction condominium The Bellemont was home to the top condo sale and second-highest overall: The full seventh-floor unit sold for $19,139,063, or nearly $900K above the $18,250,000 asking price listed in The Bellemont's offering plan. It was trailed closely by the apartment one floor above, which closed for $19,088,025. Both units measure five bedrooms, six and a half baths, and over 6,000 interior square feet. Both sellers were identified only through LLCs.
On the Upper West Side, prestigious prewar co-ops also proved popular. The past week's fourth-highest sale took place at The Beresford, an Emery Roth-designed New York City Landmark in Central Park West. The three-bedroom Residence #14E closed for $10,600,000, or slightly above the last asking price. Public records list the seller as finance executive Jonathan Sobel and the buyers as Wasserstein Perella & Co. founding partner Bill Lamber and his wife, Sheila Lambert.
Further downtown, public records show that former General Electric vice chair Beth Comstock and her husband, tech executive Chris Travers, have sold their townhouse at 62 Jane Street for $9,100,000. While slightly below the initial asking price of $10,995,000, it is nevertheless over 1.5 times more than the couple paid for it in 2012. When The Wall Street Journal announced the listing at the beginning of 2023, it noted that the couple is spending more time at their home in the Hudson Valley and is looking to downsize to a smaller Manhattan home. The buyer made the purchase through an LLC.
