Price Cuts: Historic Chelsea townhouse reduced by $500K; Central Park-facing unit at Essex House drops below $2M

At a time of year when "A Visit from St. Nicholas" (also known as "The Night Before Christmas") is on everyone's lips, it is worth noting that its writer, Clement Clarke Moore, was instrumental in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood as we know it. Mr. Moore was a grandson of Major Thomas Clarke, the British officer who bought 94 acres of land on the West Side and named his new estate in honor of a veteran's hospital in London.

Mr. Moore's parents inherited the estate in 1802 and deeded it to their only son in 1813 (h/t Daytonian in Manhattan). A short time later, Mr. Moore donated his apple orchard to the Episcopal Church for the construction of what is now General Theological Seminary, and divided the remaining lots of land for residential development. He eventually moved to Elmhurst to escape the bustle of construction, but not before writing his most famous poem.

A townhouse developed by Mr. Moore was among over 100 condos, co-ops, condops, and townhouses throughout New York that experienced price reductions from December 10-16, 2024.
