Years after his 2012 death, artist LeRoy Neiman is remembered for his brightly colored sketches of sporting events like the Olympics and the Super Bowl, his signature handlebar mustache and Cuban cigars, and his status as an Upper West Sider. In the 55 years that he lived at Hotel des Artistes, he found inspiration in the neighborhood’s energy, created a widely reproduced painting of Tavern on the Green, and endowed what would become the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies at Columbia University School of the Arts.
Most recently, a 3-bedroom, 2.5-bath duplex cooperative that belonged to him at Hotel des Artistes has been listed for $4.995 million. According to CityRealty listings, this puts it above the median price of $3.875 million for similarly sized co-ops in Central Park West.

Mr. Neiman’s obituary in The New York Times says, “In popularity, Mr. Neiman rivaled American favorites like Norman Rockwell.” The two artists would seem to be worlds apart - one was known for his wholesome images of American life, the other for his friendship with Hugh Hefner and the resulting “Man at His Leisure” series in Playboy - but Messrs. Rockwell and Neiman had one thing in common: They were both residents of Hotel des Artistes. Other illustrious residents have included New York City Mayor John Lindsay, Isadora Duncan, Rudolph Valentino, and Noel Coward.
