Updated 2/14/19 to reflect news of Amazon's withdrawal.
If artists thought they could look to Long Island City after being prices out of Manhattan and Brooklyn, they got an unpleasant surprise when an entity known as Salm Properties LLC bought the headquarters of Chain Theatre along with seven parcels of one-story warehouses for $9.82 million in April 2016. In what should come as some consolation, though, the resulting building was not an icy glass edifice, but a collection of eight four-story townhomes with a design by Zproekt that shows respect for the neighborhood’s history. The development is known as The Craftsmen Townhomes, and sales have just launched on the apartments within.

All 48 studio through three-bedroom homes feature open layouts, high ceilings, white oak floors, oversized windows, and private outdoor space in some capacity. Gourmet kitchens come equipped with Caesarstone countertops, mosaic tile backsplash, and integrated top-of-the-line appliances. Baths are outfitted with high-end fixtures.
The planned Amazon headquarters was seen as a powerful lure to The Craftsmen: The company’s planned temporary office at One Court Square is a stone’s throw from the site, and the planned Anable Basin headquarters would have allowed employees to walk home. However, even as protests caused Amazon to withdraw, the Craftsmen is still conveniently located near supermarkets, restaurants, and subway stops that allow easy access to Brooklyn and Manhattan.
The Craftsmen Townhomes' listings start at $745K for studios, $885K for one-bedrooms, $1.225 million for two-bedrooms, and a three-bedroom is listed for $1.52 million. According to CityRealty listings, these figures are an excellent bargain compared to the Long Island City median of $940K for one-bedrooms, $1.3 million for two-bedrooms, and $1.915 million for three-bedrooms.
