Near Grand Central Terminal, Lloyd Goldman’s BLDG Management Company is expeditiously erecting a 429-unit rental tower at 222 East 44th Street. Rising within Turtle Bay/Midtown East’s forest of skyscrapers, the 43-story development is already up to its 30th floor and is slated top off at 556 feet high – just taller than the United Nations Secretariat Building nearby. The site held a rather tired-looking parking garage that Goldman purchased in 2014 for $32 million.
Handel Architects are the project’s designers and SLCE are the executive architects. Given the tower’s crowded locale, on a densely-built block between Second and Third avenues, the team ingeniously shaped the building to angle away from the streetwall thus providing future residents with more light and air, and better views. Two new high-rises,a 35-floor Even Hotel and a 19-floor rental at 235 East 44th Street have recently opened, further canyon-izing the block..
