In 2013, the site of the former Cascade Linen Supply Company factory in Bedford-Stuyvesant was sold to Mike Kohn of Alliance Private Capital Group for $27 million, and now developers are planning to transform the site into a mixed-use 7-story development.
The linen supplier and laundry factory was in business for over a century, providing linens to many of the city’s restaurants and hospitals. In 2015, Kohn resold the property to Abraham Brach and partners from Williamsburg’s Hasidic Satmar community for $70 million. The new development at Myrtle Avenue and Stockton Street will hold 228 residential units spanning 550,000 square feet of space, more than 100,000 square feet of commercial space, with parking for 82 vehicles. Wedged between NYCHA’s Marcy Houses and Tompkins Houses, the apartments will be marketed to families and individual members of the Orthodox Jewish community.
The project currently has 7 addresses, including 869 Myrtle Avenue which will hold 45 apartments; the rest will hold between 25 and 35 apartments. Diego Aguilera is the architect of record. The Cascade factory buildings were demolished last year, however the site must undergo an environmental cleanup before construction can begin, as it was found to be contaminated with lead. The New York Department of Environmental Conservation has said that while the levels of contamination are not a significant threat, they are above state standards.
