The design world was thrown atilt this spring upon news of the passing of acclaimed architect and designer Zaha Hadid. We are fortunate, however, that Dame Hadid and her London-based office have a bevy of stellar projects in the pipeline, allowing her work to surprise and inspire us for years to come. Here in New York, construction of her first ground-up development, 520 West 28th Street, continues unabated with nearly the entire concrete structure enclosed in a lavish skin of metal and glass.

Caressing passersby on The High Line, the L-shaped building provides a slick softness with its rounded expanses of glass that echo the structure's curving corners. Along the building's northern West 28th Street elevation, the first of many sets of sculpted, hand-rubbed metal panels are adding a great deal of depth to the skin, capturing light and shadow as no other Manhattan facade has done before.
According to Hadid, the exterior's chevron pattern is to express the interplay between the city and The High Line. A recent press release states, "The merging of outdoors with the indoors is indicated by the horizontal V-shaped lines which frame and wraparound the expansive terraces of the units, with extensive amounts of glazing continuing this connection between park and urban city environment."
An exclusive collection of 37 condominiums are contained inside, each with signature custom-designed finishes and furnishings crafted by Hadid herself. Molded to be a seamless extension of the building's sinuous outer shell, columns naturally flow into 11-foot ceilings. Kitchens, designed in collaboration with Boffi, boast sculptural marble-clad islands and Gaggenau appliances.
There are currently ten units on the market ranging from a $4.89 million two-bed, two-bath on the third floor to a one-of-a-kind $50 million triplex penthouse at the building's crest. The building's full suite of amenities include full-time concierge and doorman, Luxury Attache lifestyle services and hand-delivered mail, on-site parking, storage vaults, the city’s first private IMAX theater, and an entertaining suite with its own terrace. The amenity floor offers a 75-foot saline system sky-lit swimming pool, fitness center, reservable private spa suite with sauna, whirlpool, steam room, cold plunge, waterfall showers, and massage beds. Occupancy is targeted for early next year.
Aside from this Related Companies' development, it was recently announced that Hadid will handle the design of another West Chelsea condominium developed by Moinian Group at 220 Eleventh Avenue.
