A new rental development in
Downtown Brooklyn will launch leasing this weekend in a historic building recently converted from commercial to residential use, and that also once served as Brooklyn's first public high school. Known as
The Livingston Collection, the apartments will be addressed as 68 Livingston Street and are within an 1800-era structure at the corner of Court Street - a prime area of the neighborhood with almost everything from retail to transit near your doorstep.
A total of 25 apartments will be available in one- and two-bedroom layouts and though leasing has not yet begun, a teaser site is available to pre-register for its grand opening. According to the leasing team at Ideal Properties Group, one-bedroom layouts will start at $3,200/month and two-bedroom/two-bathroom layouts will start at $4,700/month. City records show permits were first filed in 2012 for the conversion which also added a 6th floor to the former 5-story building, raising its height from 50 to 74 feet. There will be five units each on floors two through five, and the first floor is reserved for the residential lobby and retail. Storage for 15 bicycles will be on the cellar level and there will be a rooftop recreation area open to all residents.
The renovation and restoration is from DiGuiseppe, an architecture, interior design and development firm. The firm's website reveals the historic school building, also known as 76 Court Street, will have interior finishes that are "clean, simple, modern with surprising textures and unique furnishings," and the rooftop will have plantings and wood decking islands. There is also a sole interior rendering of a modern kitchen with a smokey color palette that has recessed lighting, and includes a dishwasher and a microwave.
Renderings of the building show a Bank of America will occupy the ground-floor retail space. Though not an official city landmark, the property has a notable past. According to several sources including the Brooklyn Public Library, the building housed the borough's first public high school, then known as Central Grammar School, opening in 1878.
The Livingston Collection is located within walking distance to several subway lines and buses, and is among both new developments like the under-construction 117 Livingston Street and historic properties like the the 32-story prewar skyscraper 75 Livingston Street, with the latter located directly across the street.
