As of this writing, New York is in the throes of the first heat wave of 2024. Temperatures are expected to reach as high as the mid-nineties and made more unpleasant by a “heat dome,” a meteorological term for a phenomenon that essentially traps hot air at the surface and doesn’t allow it to escape. Cooling centers are open, Con Ed crews are mobilized to keep the city's power (and air conditioners!) on, and New Yorkers are beating the heat however they can before the city's public pools open on June 27.
At this point in the residential amenity race, indoor pools have become almost de rigueur for New York’s luxury buildings. Some buildings have taken it one step further by including cold plunge pools with their aquatic offerings. Cooled to temperatures no warmer than 59 degrees, these can come as a massive relief on hot days like this. They also offer physical and mental health benefits like decreased swelling and inflammation, relieved muscle soreness, improved sleep, a more radiant appearance, and a rush of endorphins.

Cold plunge pools are typically part of hydrotherapy circuits that allow visitors to go from the icy water to the heat of a hot tub or sauna; however, on days like this, one could achieve a similar effect by stepping outside after the cold plunge. We look at residential buildings that count cold plunge pools among their health and wellness amenities.
